Dr. Matteo N. Barbaglia graduated in Medical Biotechnology in 2015, and obtained a PhD in medical sciences and biotechnology at the University of Eastern Piedmont (Novara, Italy) in 2021. His main work has focused on studying the antiviral activity of sex hormones in the context of hepatitis C infection.
Over the years, he has focused his interests in the field of virology, hepatology, and translational medicine. During his studies, he worked on several projects related to the research of liquid biopsy-based biomarkers, mainly implicated in liver diseases. From 2022 to 2023, he worked at the Italian Liver Foundation (Trieste, Italy) within the INTERREG Italy-Slovenia project "Cross-border platform for efficient management of biobanks" (C3B). Research activities included a pilot project on chronic liver disease biomarkers, the creation of standardized operating procedures for the collection and processing of biological samples, as well as collection and analysis of the same samples in collaboration with other research centers, as well as participating in the production of informative material.
Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher and lab manager in the laboratory of Prof. Nicole Zitzmann at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford. His research is focused on studying the regulation of UDP-glucose uptake in the endoplasmic reticulum, with the aim of identifying new pharmacological targets within the SLC family of membrane proteins and developing targeted inhibitors with potential antiviral activity.
