Jo was a senior postdoctoral scientist planning, supervising, coordinating and performing experiments on two main streams of research interest, focussed on the antiviral effects of iminosugars. The first was the development and testing of antivirals against dengue virus, in particular targeting host cellular factors required for dengue viral morphogenesis (the formation and secretion of infectious virus). She was particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms of action of iminosugars against dengue in primary human macrophages. Some of this work involved studies of the roles different cytokines play in cell susceptibility to dengue infection and receptors used by dengue virus on human cells. The second area of research was looking at the antiviral activity of iminosugars against influenza virus, both in the lab and in collaboration with colleagues at other institutions.
